COLOUR IN EMPLOYMENT

City University London, Northampton Square
London, EC1V 0HB

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS MEETING - REGISTER USING THE ORANGE BUTTON LOWER DOWN PAGE

Note: Colour Group Members may register for a discounted price.

Background:
Concern has been expressed that current colour vision standards in occupational environments are variable and employ pass / fail limits that are often selected arbitrarily based the suspected level of difficulty of the colour-related tasks. The use of different tests and protocols for colour assessment in different countries means that the same applicant can pass and fail certification within the same occupation. The principal aim of the two-day Colour in Employment symposium is to enhance awareness of the problems involved in setting and enforcing minimum colour vision requirements within occupations and to discuss new approaches to colour assessment that reduce variability and minimise unfair discrimination.

Programme:
The first day will focus on fundamental aspects of colour vision and the various factors that cause variability in normal colour vision and in congenital and acquired deficiencies. Data on statistical outcomes of current tests and protocols will also be presented. The second day will be biased more towards colour vision requirements in occupations and analysis of current practices. The programme also includes a hands-on session on the most common colour vision assessment tests employed in visually demanding occupations. Advanced Vision and Optometric Tests designed to assess other aspects of visual performance that are of interest within occupations will also be demonstrated.

Audience:
The symposium is appropriate and will be of interest to occupational medical examiners, ophthalmologists, optometrists, graphic designers as well as vision scientists interested in the assessment of colour vision and visual performance within occupations. Representatives from different occupational environments will be invited to attend the symposium to discuss current protocols and changing needs in view of the ever-increasing use of colour in visual displays and the switch to LEDs for signal lights.
