ALUN FOSTER
Chief Chemist, Winsor & Newton

Alun Foster

Alun held the job of Chief Chemist at Winsor & Newton from 1977 to 2007, having started at the company in 1968. Equally interested in both art and
chemistry, he chose chemistry and graduated with an external London BSc in 1967. He subsequently obtained a Certificate in Surface Coatings
Technology. Combining both interests enabled him to understand artists’ needs and relate their requirements to the formulation of the products.
His responsibilities have included research and development, technical services, quality control, technical enquiries and legislation. He has presented
many technical papers on art materials to conservators and artists in the UK, USA and Europe. Alun continues to provide technical support to
Winsor & Newton on a consultancy basis.

VICTORIA FINLAY

Victoria Finlay
©Martin Palmer

Anthropologist and journalist Victoria Finlay has travelled round the world uncovering the stories behind the dyes and pigments that make up an artist's
palette. Among other adventures she will talk about how in Mexico she visited a remote Central American village where the women wore skirts dyed
purple with a colour made from sea snails gathered from the cliffs many days' journey away; in Afghanistan's Badakshan mountains she learned about
the three different colours of lapis lazuli; and how she visited India's Bihar province to unravel the mystery of a watercolour pigment made with
the urine of cows forcefed with mango leaves.
